Y2 Maths Quiz – who will win?

This week has seen the introduction of our first ever Y2 Maths Quiz. Each class was split into teams and worked their way through 11 questions – working together, whispering so as not to give their answer away, solving problems and being very quick on their buzzers! Led by their Team Leader each team decided on which Learning Hero would be their mascot and why – “We’ve chosen Bear because Bear’s good at listening and being encouraging and that’s what we need to do.” By Friday the winning team from each class will go head-to-head to find the overall Year 2 Maths Quiz Champions – we can’t...

Learning Together

Maths and Learning Heroes Week has officially begun! This morning every child spent time working with children from a different year group.  The children were learning how to be like our Learning Heroes – working together on tricky tasks, listening and sharing ideas and remembering to keep on going. Take a look… Y1 and FS2 working together to build 2D shapes using pasta and marshmallows. FS2 and Year 2 working together to build a strong, stable bridge. FS2 and Year 2 giving directions – “Forwards 3 steps, turn...

National Numeracy Challenge

In our meeting this morning we talked about how important it is to talk as positively about maths as we do about reading and writing.  In our country it is often seen as socially acceptable to talk negatively about maths and declare yourself ‘no good at it’.  The people behind Family Maths Toolkit are trying hard to change our language around maths and have devised a National Numeracy Challenge for adults. How confident do you feel about maths?  The National Numeracy Challenge will help you identify your strengths as well as the areas you need to develop.  You then work through the resources and test yourself to see how far you’ve come.  Perhaps the start of 2017 is a good time to give yourself a new goal to reach?! If you want to know anymore about the challenge or you have taken it and are happy to share how you are getting on, please come and talk to us. Keep checking back for lots of updates on Maths Week. Miss...

Year 2 Castle Dressing Up Day

Dragons, knights, princesses, princes, king and queens descended into school on Year 2 Castle Dressing up Day! All classes started their day by having a fun filled costume parade explaining who they were and showing off their incredible outfits. Children learnt about the meaning of a Coat of Arms and created their own, remembering blue colors for truth, green for joy and red for being regal. The children demonstrated huge enthusiasm when creating their finger puppets from felt. We had some truly magnificent creations. Children engaged happily in role play, getting into character and acting out stories. At playtime Molly in Morpurgo Class said ‘Everyone is playing together in one group!’ Taylor in Ryder Class said ‘It’s been the best day ever!’ Thank you to all the children for making it such a successful day and to the adults at home for all their efforts....

Dressing Up

What a blast from the past! Everyone impressed us during our 110th birthday week with their fantastic costumes; we saw flat caps, aprons, long skirts, frills and waistcoats. Children got a real taste for what the school might have been like 11o years ago, learning about what the classroom looked like, the activities children might have engaged in and the different toys and resources they would have played with.  During the morning Mrs Rimmer visited each class and carried out a hand inspection and being quite strict!  Teachers stayed in character all day, giving the children a real taste of Edwardian school life.   A big thank you to everyone for organising the costumes, it was a great way to help us in our 110th birthday celebrations. Mrs Greenhalgh...
